Biography:
Born in 1921 in Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh, Prof. Ramakrishna’s academic prowess was evident from an early age.
Personal Life & Education:
Prof. Ramakrishna completed his Bachelor’s degree from Andhra University and Master’s degree in Physics from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. He did his PhD in Acoustics from the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, USA, in 1949.
Career Highlights:
• He joined the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore as a Lecturer in the ECE Department, IISc in 1953, and later became the Chair of the ECE Department. His research areas were acoustics, vibrations, and sound systems.
• Later, he served as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hyderabad.

• He played the key role in designing the acoustics of Golden Jubilee Hall in the ECE department, IISc, Faculty hall in the main building of IISc, and Chowdiah Hall, Malleshwaram, Bangalore.
• The acoustics of the Centenary auditorium of Madras University, which is opposite the Marina Beach, Chennai was designed by him.
• The SP building and the Devices building were constructed during his tenure.
• He started the center for Information Processing (1971-79) in the department. The center had 4 areas of activity - speech signal processing, acoustic signal processing, optical signal processing, and digital signal processing. Funded by Ministry of Defense.
• He served as the chair of the ECE department, IISc from 1969 to 1974.

• Fellow, Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE), India
• Recipient of the Bhagawantham Award
• Awarded the Raman Centenary Gold Medal
