Biography:
He completed his first batch of BE from Bangalore University in 1973. Later, he pursued his M.E. from ECE dept., Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 1975 and Ph.D. from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bombay in 1981.

After his PhD, he joined LRDE Bangalore as a scientist (1983-85). Was a visiting faculty at Norwegian Institute of Technology, Trondheim Norway (1986-88), Marquette University of Milwaukee (1988-90), Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (FHGEES) Erlangen (1997-98), Griffith University (1999-00), Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) Bangkok (2013), IIT Guwahati (2015).

He was involved in the GSM speech coder competition (1986-88) and MP4 AAC coder competition (1997-98). He was the founding director of ESQUBE Communications Pvt. Ltd., an IISc company (2014-18). He was the o-Founding Member, Chairman, IEEE Signal Processing Society, Bangalore Chapter. He was also the co-Founder, WISSAP series of winter schools 2006-2024.
He joined the Indian Institute of Science as an Assistant Professor in 1985, served again in the same role from 1990 to 1997, was promoted to Associate Professor (1997–2014), and later Professor (2014–2018).
