Biography
Prof. Utpal Mukherji served as a senior faculty member in the Department of Electrical Communication
Engineering (ECE) at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru. He joined IISc in Assistant Prof. in 1989
after working at AT&T Bell Laboratories in the United States. He then got promoted to Associate Professor in 1996 and later retired as Professor in 2024.Over the years, he has made significant contributions to communication networks, communication theory, and wireless systems
research.
Educational Background :
• B.Tech. in Electrical Engineering, IIT Bombay, 1980.
• S.M., E.E., and Sc.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science,
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA (1982, 1984, 1986).
Research Contributions
• Developed analytical models and optimization techniques for modern communication networks.
• Worked extensively on power–delay tradeoffs in wireless communication under fading conditions.
• Contributed to optimal energy-management strategies for energy-harvesting sensor nodes.
• Advanced scheduling theory for multiaccess channels and degraded broadcast channels.
• Published research on routing and scheduling frameworks in multi-hop wireless networks with QoS guarantees.
