Biography
Prof. Utpal Mukherji served as a senior faculty member in the Department of Electrical Communication
Engineering (ECE) at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru. He joined IISc in 1989
after working at AT&T Bell Laboratories in the United States. Over the years, he has made
significant contributions to communication networks, communication theory, and wireless systems
research.
Educational Background
• B.Tech. in Electrical Engineering, IIT Bombay, 1980.
• S.M., E.E., and Sc.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science,
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA (1982, 1984, 1986).
Professional Career
• 1986–1989: Member of Technical Staff, Distributed Systems Research Department, AT&T Bell Laboratories, USA.
• 1989–2024: Faculty Member, Department of Electrical Communication Engineering, IISc Bengaluru.
• Served in various academic and mentoring roles, guiding research efforts in communication networks and systems.
Research Contributions
• Developed analytical models and optimization techniques for modern communication networks.
• Worked extensively on power–delay tradeoffs in wireless communication under fading conditions.
• Contributed to optimal energy-management strategies for energy-harvesting sensor nodes.
• Advanced scheduling theory for multiaccess channels and degraded broadcast channels.
• Published research on routing and scheduling frameworks in multi-hop wireless networks with QoS guarantees.
