ABOUT SPCOM

2022 IEEE International Conference on Signal Processing and Communications (SPCOM) provides a forum for researchers from academia, research laboratories, and industries to come together to share and learn about current developments in these emerging fields. SPCOM 2022 is the fourteenth in a series of biennial events that have been organized since 1990 at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc).

MESSAGE FROM GENERAL CHAIRS

Neelesh B. Mehta Rahul Vaze

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, we warmly welcome you to the Fourteenth edition of IEEE International Conference on Signal Processing and Communication (SPCOM 2022) to be held on the beautiful campus of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

The conference will feature an excellent technical program (ably managed by the Technical Program Committee), which we are sure will provide an enriching experience to all the attendees and further exciting collaborative research. In this edition, we have three plenaries talks, eight tutorials, twenty-one invited talks, and around a hundred contributed papers. There will also be a CXO panel discussion on SPCOM's research focus and societal needs.

This year is also special being the 75th year of formation of the organizing department (Electrical Communication Engg). To mark that, in conjunction with SPCOM, a special alumni event and a parallel technical symposium (SPEED) are also being organized.

One unique feature of SPCOM is the Graduation Day Forum (started in the 2018 edition) where selected senior graduate students across India present their work. This year we have six shortlisted students who will be presenting their exciting work.

Given the uncertainties of the pandemic, we chose to opt for a hybrid event, which comes with its own unique set of technical and logistical challenges. We hope the attendees will bear with us if we run into any technical difficulties beyond our control. At our end, we have tried to make it a smooth experience. We thank the student volunteers who have put in an incredible amount of effort in this regard.

To facilitate movement between different venues on the IISc campus, a couple of e-vehicles (Transvahan e-rickshaws) have been arranged which will be available throughout the duration of the conference to ferry the participants around. Feel free to just hop on or just walk!

To put a conference of this magnitude together is not a small task. In this regard, we would like to thank the TPC chairs, anonymous reviewers, tutorial and plenary chairs, finance chair, publication, publicity, and website chairs. A special thank you to the local organizing committee together with the volunteers who had to work really hard in the past few days.

We would also like to thank all of the sponsors for their generous financial support. We would also like to thank the IEEE ComSoc Bangalore chapter for their very generous help in setting up the conference. Lastly, we would like to thank all of the conference participants for their contributions, which are the foundation of this conference.

We hope that you will have a productive and fun‐filled time at the conference.

General Co-chairs
Neelesh B Mehta and Rahul Vaze

MESSAGE FROM TPC CHAIRS

Sundeep Prabhakar Chepuri Soma Biswas Saif K. Mohammed

Welcome to the 2022 IEEE International Conference on Signal Processing and Communication (SPCOM), a premier biennial conference held at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, India. This year’s conference has an excellent collection of events; we hope you will benefit and enjoy the conference. Although in-person events are resuming as before the COVID-19 pandemic, keeping in mind the prevailing uncertainty, the SPCOM 2022 Organizing Committee decided to have a live online/in-person hybrid conference.

For the 14th edition of SPCOM, we received 366 submissions, which probably is an all-time high with about a 19% increase in submissions over the previous edition. A total of 156 Reviewers contributed to the double-blind peer review of IEEE SPCOM 2022 papers. Specifically, 288 papers were reviewed, out of which 57% of the papers received two reviews and 43% of the papers received three or more reviews. We accepted 99 papers and the overall acceptance rate was 27%, which is lower than the average acceptance rate of earlier editions of SPCOM.

The accepted papers are organized into 20 oral sessions spread over three days. In addition to the accepted papers, we have 21 invited talks organized into 7 oral sessions from eminent speakers to complement the contributed talks. The invited talks were coordinated by Aditya Gopalan.

We also shortlisted eight papers for the Student Paper Contest, wherein the finalists will present a poster in the Student Paper Contest session. A jury of 4 experts will select the top 3 Best Student Paper Awards.

Graduate Day Forum was coordinated by Rahul Vaze and Chandra Murthy. We received 30 submissions from soon-to-be graduates about their Ph.D. thesis, and six were accepted. A jury of 4 experts will select the top 2 Graduation Day Forum Awards.

Plenary talks were coordinated by K.V.S. Hari and Joy Kuri. We are very pleased to have these three exciting talks:

  • Information Theoretic Data Privacy, Prakash Narayan, Univ. of Maryland College Park, MD, USA
  • Learning to Simply Ultrasound, Alison Noble, Univ. of Oxford, UK
  • A light in digital darkness: Free space optics to connect the unconnected, Mohamed-Slim Alouini, KAUST, Saudi Arabia

  • Tutorial presentations were coordinated by Chandra Murthy and Chandramani Singh. We have eight invited half-day tutorials spread over the first two days of the conference on a wide range of very timely topics.

CXO Forum is a new feature in the SPCOM series. Experts from the industry moderated by Aloknath De will have a stimulating panel discussion on the relevance and importance of SPCOM research in catering to the current needs of society. This year we also have two industry keynote talks: The Essential Role of AI in the 5G Future by Kapil Bhattad (Qualcomm) and What goes behind an Intelligent Camera? by Kiran Nanjunda Iyer (Samsung).

All the SPCOM 2022 talks will be live in-person or virtual. The virtual platform to enable the challenging task of hybrid live in-person and remote participation was coordinated by Rajiv Soundararajan. Each contributed paper is also accompanied by a pre-recorded video presentation and is available during the dates of the conference and on-demand for a few weeks after the conference concludes.

We would like to thank the members of the IEEE SPCOM 2022 Organizing Committee, numerous volunteers, Award Committee, and in particular, the members of the Technical Program Committee, who have put an enormous effort into helping us create a very exciting and stimulating technical program for this conference. Finally, we thank our plenary, tutorial and invited speakers, panel members, and authors for their efforts and contributions. We look forward to learning about your research.

We sincerely hope that you will have an enjoyable and informative SPCOM 2022.

    Technical Program Chairs
Sundeep Prabhakar Chepuri, Soma Biswas, Saif K. Mohammed
