Prospective Students

Thank you for your interest to explore admission to the Department.  Please see our Academics page to know about various programmes offered by the Department.  Admission to these programs are handled through a centralised admission portal in the Institute.  Please see these pages for the Admission brochure and for submitting your application.

Kindly note that the erstwhile M.Tech. (CN) program has been changed to M.Tech. (ECE).  Kindly visit the page for an FAQ on this program.  This new curriculum will be followed for August 2021 admissions onwards.  Please visit pages on Ph.D., M.Tech. (Research) or M.Tech. (ECE) for frequently asked questions about these programs. Please write to office.ece @ iisc.ac.in if you have any other questions.  IISc has launched an online MTech program on ECE in 2021.

Browse through the Academics and Research sections of this website to know about the degree programmes offered and the research carried out in the department.  The admission process (for all our programs) typically starts in February each year. Mid-year admissions for PhD program starts in October/November. Please see the IISc's admissions website. You may need to qualify in appropriate examinations (for example GATE) to be eligible for admissions; make sure you follow the timeline for these examinations.

The following information is for candidates appearing for August 2022 admissions.

[RECENT UPDATES]

IISc has invited for August 202admissions.  Please visit admissions website for details.

Shortlisted students would have received a letter from our admissions office inviting them to an interview during November 22-23 2021 for January 2022 admission to our research programme.  The Department will contact students on the day of their interview to inform them about the next steps. Please visit pages on Ph.D., M.Tech. (Research) or M.Tech. (ECE) for frequently asked questions about these programs. Please write to office.ece @ iisc.ac.in if you have any other questions.

This page is to inform you about the interview procedure in our department, so that you can prepare well for it.  In addition, you will soon receive an mail from the department asking you to fill an online form including proposed research areas based on your interests.   All candidates, across all research areas, will be examined on their analytical ability in two of the following areas of basic mathematics:

  • Calculus and Differential Equations
  • Matrix Analysis and Linear Algebra
  • Fourier, Laplace, and z-Transforms
  • Probability Theory and Random Processes
  • Discrete Mathematics (combinatorics, graphs).

You will be asked to indicate in a google form (to be shared later), two of the above areas on which you will be tested.

In the online (video based home) interview, you may be first asked questions on the chosen mathematics topics. The problems posed will not involve lengthy calculations, but will test the basics, and the ability to think “on one’s feet”. You may also be asked questions in the proposed area of research or any related area. These questions will be from topics of undergraduate study and topics of post-graduate study (if applicable). The nature of the questions will be to explore the student’s clarity of thought and depth of understanding of the topics, rather than descriptive system level knowledge.

Some highlights of the online video-interview procedure:

  • The online video-interview will be conducted using Google Meet/Microsoft Teams. Those filling the google form will receive a confirmation email about the scheduled session/day of your interview.
  • You will receive an email with the Google Meet invite, just before your interview time within this scheduled session. Relevant certificates will be verified and further instructions for joining the technical interview will be given at this meeting.  If you do not receive this invite within 2 hours from the start time of the session allotted to you, please contact Department Office at 08022932276/ 08022932278.
  • As indicated in the invitation letter you received for this interview, please keep a signed copy of the Declaration Form.   Also keep your degree certificates, proof of date of birth (10th class, or passport or Aadhar etc), and caste certificate (only if relevant) available for verification.
  • Once you join the online interview meeting, there will be an initial verification by the interview committee, followed by the technical part of the interview.
  • You are advised to choose a well-lit space and keep your laptop/tablet/mobile phone in a stable position so that the interview committee can see you well.
  • Keep enough blank white papers and a black/blue pen to write your answers and show it in front of your camera for the committee to see.
