ECE: Admissions

The Department of Electrical and Communication Engineering, Indian Institute of Science, is steeped in history, just as its parent institute. Though the department was formally conceived in 1947, its origins date back to the early days of the Institute itself. Since it is one of the first places to start training in electrical sciences and engineering in India, it has played a major role in the development of the field in the country. Over the years, the Department has provided quality training to the students, joined hands in numerous nationally important missions, and provided industry with reliable manpower. Quick Facts
> PREDA, the first analog computer in the country, was built in the Department in mid-50’s.
> The Deptartment has been working on projects related to national security since 1950s.
> The Department has been working with the industry from as early as 1955.
> India's first high voltage laboratory was set up in the 'ECE Section' which actually assisted the growth of electrical industries in Bangalore area in later years.

The Department aims for excellence in theoretical and experimental research in Communications, Signal Processing, Microelectronics and RF/Photonics. The Department is recognized by the UGC as a Center for Advanced Studies and has a rich heritage and a strong reputation for R and D activities of internationally acclaimed standards. The highlight of research activities over the years can be seen here: Click here.

The department offers graduate level courses for Masters and Doctoral programmes.
Master's Programmes
> MTech: The admissions to MTech is through GATE score (formerly the programme was called ME). The available areas to pursue MTech in ECE at IISc are: Communication & Networks, Microelectronics Systems, and Signal Processing. The duration of MTech is 2 years, and all students (with valid GATE scores) get MHRD fellowship during this duration.
> MTech (Research): The programme is research intensive (less coursework intensive compared to MTech). The areas are same as that for MTech, and applicants apply through GATE scores. The selected applicants (intimated by May) go through an additional round of interview (generally, held in June). The duration of MTech(Research) at ECE is between 2-3 years, and is dependent on the research output. The MHRD fellowship, as in MTech, is awarded here as well. For details on nature of research click here.
> MTech (Artificial Intelligence):Artificial Intelligence has captured the imagination of the entire world with its potential ability to solve complex societal problems of our times: universal access to healthcare and education, efficient transportation, increased efficiency in providing e-governance services to the public, etc. Focused national efforts are underway in many countries. The Government of India has initiated widespread discussion on how India should strive to be among the top nations in the world in the AI ecosystem. As a step in that direction, IISc is launching a two-year M.Tech. program in Artificial Intelligence, to fill the critical needs of the industry and fill the gap in high-end AI scientists and engineers. For details on nature of Artificial Intelligence click here.
Doctoral Programme
> PhD: The programme is designed for gaining advanced knowledge and research experience in a specific area of communication engineering. The principal component of the programme is a dissertation based on original research. The student is associated with one or more research advisors. In case of more than one advisors, one must be from ECE Department. For more details on the programme: click here. All scholars recieve MHRD fellowship.
The requirements to apply for the above programmes is detailed at: click here.

The research areas pursued in the department include a wide range of communication engineering topics. This spans from mathematical theory and simulations to implementation on CMOS technology. The key areas of current interest are:

The good infrasturcture, world class faculty and proven track record in research has helped the department to serve as an ideal place to pursue research. The IISc features in the top 100 and Top 150 Times higher education rankings for Engineering and Technology and QS rankings for 2015, respectively. In the year 2015-2016 several of our Research Scholars (PhD Students) bagged prestigious fellowships offered by the Govt. of India, and different R and D organizations (see below).
TCS PhD Fellowship
IBM PhD Fellowship
Intel PhD Fellowship
There are yearly application calls for these fellowships. The benefits of the fellowships can include a higher stipend than MHRD, and additional contingency grants. To know more about the fellowships: click here.

Owing to the rigourous coursework, research, and the thirst to keep learning and innovating, we have been privileged to have alumni presence in leading R and D companies of the world. A glimpse of the widely sort after companies in the placement season is below.

The salary package varies from company to company (averaging approx. more than 10 Lakhs-per-annum). Research Scholars also get the opportunity to intern in R & D Labs inside and outside the country. The PhD Scholars post completion have joined academics (this includes several institutes of National importance), international Post-Doctoral fellowships, and R and D labs.

The department being placed at IISc, one of the most admired temples of knowledge, has the benefit of sharing the ideas across departments of science and engineering. Often this helps in cross-fertilization of ideas, and opening up of new directions at the boundaries beyond the known understandings. Further, the Silicon City of India, Bengaluru, aids in industry interactions with established and bubbling start-up companies. Regular events hosted by the department, enabling sharing the knowledge within, across and outside the institute, include the following.
Faculty Colloquiums
The faculty of the department share their research groups findings. For more details: click here.
Industry Interaction Seminars
An initiative to encourage interaction between the vibrant tech industry of Bangalore and the researchers at the IISc. For more details: click here.
Student Colloquiums
A seminar series where students of the department are encouraged to share any idea they found interesting. For more details: click here.
Electrical Sciences Symposium
An yearly symposium focussing on research findings gathered by final year students: For more details: click here.
Intl. Conf. Signal Processing and Communications
A biennial conference being organized since 1990. For more details: click here.
Apart from the above the Department students and faculty also contribute to the range of activities pursued by IEEE-IISc Student Branch, SPIE Photonics Society, and IISc-SIAM Student Chapter, in and outside the Institute. This include outreach programmes in far off institutes, and popular talks.

The last date for the submission of application is: 24th March 2017. A list of programs offered at the ECE department is available at the link below. You can apply directly at the IISc admissions portal.
