WOMEN IN ENGINEERING

Organizers: Anubha Gupta, IIIT Delhi and Neelam Sinha, IIIT Bangalore
Anubha Gupta

Anubha Gupta received her PhD. from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, India in 2006 in Electrical Engineering. She did her second Master’s as a full time student from the University of Maryland, College Park, USA from 2008-2010 in Education with concentration: Higher Education Leadership and Policy Studies. She worked as Assistant Director with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Govt. of India (through Indian Engineering Services) from 1993 to 1999 and as faculty for about 10 years before joining IIIT-Delhi in Dec. 2013, where she is currently working as a Professor. She has author/co-authored over 100 technical papers in refereed journals and conferences and has published research papers in both engineering and education. Dr. Gupta is a senior member of IEEE Signal processing Society, a member of IEEE Women in Engineering Society, Chair, IEEE SPS Delhi Chapter, and is currently serving as Associate Editor of IEEE Access journal. Her research interests include solving real life problems using AI, particularly, in biomedical areas of cancer imaging, cancer genomics, fMRI, MRI, EEG, and ECG signal processing. More details about her research work are available at her lab page (http://sbilab.iiitd.edu.in/index.html).

Neelam Sinha

Neelam is an Associate Professor at IIIT-Bangalore. She obtained her PhD from IISc, for her work on MR Imaging, in 2008. She had a brief stint at GE Healthcare too. At IIITB, she and her students work on problems at the intersection of Medical Image Analysis and Computer Vision.

Is Engineering the Right Profession for Me?

Hema A Murthy, Professor, IIT Madras
Hema A Murthy

Hema A Murthy has been a faculty at IIT-Madras since 1992. She was also a student there, obtaining her PhD in 1992. She became a Fellow of INAE in 2017. Her research interests read as : speech processing & synthesis, computational brain research, any area that involves Machine Learning and Signal Processing. She has been honoured with several awards, notably the GE Innovation award and the first prize in research expo, Shaastraa 2013.

Artificial Intelligence in Medicine

Jayanthi Sivaswamy, Professor, IIIT Hyderabad
Prof. Jayanthi Sivaswamy

Jayanthi Sivaswamy is a Professor at IIIT Hyderabad (since 2001) and currently serves as Dean (Academics). She obtained her PhD from Syracuse University in Electrical Engineering. Her research interest started with understanding biological vision and later to medical image analysis. A major focus of her research has been on Computer Aided Diagnostics (CAD), for which she has collaborated with several hospitals in India and medical schools abroad.  Her current interests include population-specific template and growth modelling for the Indian brain in collaboration with Sree Chitra Tirunal Inst. of Med Sc and Tech. She has chaired the biennial Medimage workshop series several times and has mentored startups.

India's Giant Leap in Space -- Earth To Mars

Ritu Karidhal, Scientist, ISRO
Dr. Ritu Karidhal

Ritu Karidhal Srivastava, the "Rocket Woman" of India, is a scientist at ISRO. She has been associated with ISRO since 1997. She was a Deputy Operations Director to India's Mars orbital mission, Mangalyaan.  She played a keyrole to conceptualize and execute the craft’s onward autonomy system, which operated the satellite’s functions and responded to malfunctions. She supervised the Chandrayaan 2 Mission as the Mission Director. She received the ISRO Young Scientist Award in 2007. She also presented at TED and TEDx events describing the success of the Mars Orbiter Mission.

What Happens When Neuroscience Meets Engineering?

Dr. Laxmi T Rao, Professor, NIMHANS
Dr. Laxmi T Rao

Dr. Laxmi T Rao is a Professor of Neurophysiology at NIMHANS, Bangalore. She has been a faculty at NIMHANS since 2005. She obtained her PhD at the Neurophysiology Department at NIMHANS in 2000. She heads a lab at NIMHANS that studies the various behavioural assays for cognitive functions in animal models, polysomnographic studies to study sleep architecture, different stages of fear cognition and physiographs to study cardiovascular and respiratory physiology. She serves as an Editorial board member for various journals of repute.

Women in Engineering: The Global Vision
